Metro cities like Chennai is yet to be electrified 100%. Irrespective of the hard, devoted and dedicated services of Tamilnadu Chief Minister, Dy. Chief Minister, and man of his kind Chennai Mayor, still there are many parts in Chennai to get electricity connection. Poor people stay in platforms, unauthorised land, etc., atleast to make themself a identity of living area. But their safety becomes question mark when they live without any basic amenity. The worst case is to live in dark where no one knows what kind of threatens they will have to face.

Though one may find difficult to find such locations in Chennai, there are frequent news that gets published in the news paper. But again that does't get spotted by the concerned department. Thank god, atleast people have been blessed with many active NGOs working hard to help these people.

ExNoRa International is one of the renewoned NGO in Chennai who works on the clean environment and recently has taken various measures to fight against the Global Warming. Light A Home is one of the mission by which they are keen in saving the kerosene for future generation and reducing the CO2 emission by replacing kerosene lamps with Solar Lamps. People who live in Below Poverty Line use Kerosene lamp as the source of light, which consumes kerosene without any great benefit to them but at the same time polluting the environment and challenging health condition of the people. By replacing 1 lakh such kerosene lamps, they have estimated to save around 45 Lakh littres of Kerosene every year and prevent CO2 emission.

Solar Lamp Distribution at Tambaram

ExNoRa International today is Lighting 106 homes by providing them the Solar Lamp, which can give light to the people for the next 20 years. Mr. Elangovan, MP, North Chennai and Mrs. Salma, Chairperson, Tamilnadu Social Welfare Board were the chief guest for this event.
Mr. Elangovan insisted on the usage of solar energy against the conventional and other renewable sources which are either scarce resource, huge setting up process or even some times hazardous to health. While comparing, Solar energy is safe, clean and green energy. Appreciating the services of ExNoRa, he also highlighted the role of NGOs who can reach the people quickly and offer the required services immediately, on the other hand Government bureau has to undergo various processes to execute a project which takes a longer period and some times get lapsed with time. He also promised to arrange few solar street lights to the people living there.
Mrs. Salma disheartened seeing the living condition of the people there. Admitting to the condition she encouraged people saying that she will speak to all the concern departments and arrange for the basic amenities including drinking water facility. “Women and children gets empowered when they have good and safe living environment, and lights after the sun set will increase their role productively to their family and to the society” she said. After addressing to the people they distributed the solar lamps as the initial level of safeguarding the people living there.
Earlier this hamlet near Tambaram Perungalathur Panchayat in the Kiskintha Road, has been identified by Mr. P.B. Sugumar, founder of Compassion Action Mission Charitable Trust and approached ExNoRa for the immediate remedy to provide light for these people. He himself donated for 50 solar lamps. ExNoRa International under its Light A Home project has assessed and arranged to donate the solar lamps to the deserving people here. Snake bite, Scorpion bite and threatening of small fox were usual problem for them.

ExNoRa has a great feeling of compassion towards the lakhs and lakhs of common men who live in slums / Nari kuravas / pavement vendors, farmers, fisherman who do not even have a lamp in their house and use kerosene lamps for their daily needs. Each such kerosene lamps consume about 4 litters of Kerosene every month. This will clearly save about 45 lakhs litters of kerosene every year for next 20 years apart from giving light at these homes for reading and use. This scheme will also play a vital role in fighting against Global warming.EI has already found around 15000 such families and with the association of NSS wings under University of Chennai, Anna University, Lions Club, Rotary Club and other NGOs will reach out to 1 lakh families before March 2010. We invite all the interested people to join hand in this scheme to completely eradicate the usage of kerosene lamps.

Solar Lamp Distribution at Pulicut

The event was to hand over two Health Centres at Konum Kuppam and Arangamkuppam, Pulicut Island, Thiruvallur district. This was organized by Mahasemam a renowned NGO in Tamilnadu and Meenakshi Mission Hospital. The chief guests were Mr. Bejnamin Cherian - Rotary International, Mr. Matt MacCalla – Direct Relief International, USA. While Dr. N. Sethuraman – Founder Chiarman, Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre gave the welcome address.

Pulicut Island is 60 kms from Chennai is a salt water lagoon and is separated from the Bay of Bengal by a strip of land. The total area is around 13 Kms length and 1 Km breadth. There are 14 Kuppams in the total Island and around 3800 families are living who are totally depended on Sea for their livelihood. The town is famous for its historic Dutch cemetery. It is again very near to Sriharikotta, Andhra Pradesh, space centre.

The living conditions of the people is slowly progressing as many NGOs have extended themselves to improvise the situation. The island was noted by many after the Tsunami affected in Dec 26, 2004. Though the Government has provided electricity, it is not adequate and also many a time when power goes the retrieval time is 6 hours to 48 hours. In the evening hours there are no common lighting / street lights available and so the total area goes into dark. When no electricity, Kerosene lamps are the only source of light for them. Many times the people are affected by bites from poisonous snakes, scorpion, snail and other reptiles. Children have to cross the lake to reach the nearer town for education thro boats.

ExNoRa International identified this island thro Mahasemam and donated 20 Solar lamps to the people living their as a token of acceptance to eradicate the usage of Kerosene lamps in that area. Two lamps each given to the two health centres while the rest 16 numbers of solar lamps given to the deserving fishermen in that area. All these 20 lamps were donated by the employees of Thirdware Solutions Ltd., Chennai. Mr. Sathish Menon, founder and director had volunteered himself and came forward to donate 20 lamps along with his team mates.

Solkar Solar Industry Limited has arranged to provide the Wonderlite (solar lamps) at a subsidized rate of Rs.1500/- for this initiative. Solar Lamp Distribution at Arakkonam

The event “Azhagia Arakkonam” was organized jointly by ExNoRa International and Rotary Club to stress on fighting against Global warming and caring environment. As a part of it, they exhibited the recycling of Plastics and Papers, growing bema bamboo and adopting solar products. This event was presided over by S. Rajendran I.A.S. (District Collector Vellore) and handed over the donation of 10 solar lamps to the deserving people.

Mr. Krishna kumar, Branch Manager, Canara Bank, Arakkonam - donated 5 lamps, Mr. Eric and Purnima McCutcheon donated 4 lamps and Mr. Maheswaran, Wipro, donated 1 lamp to cover 10 lamps that have been donated at the event.

They donated the lamps under the Light A Home project which is about to give light for next 20 years to Smart School, school for the mentally challenged children, CAM home for girls and St. Andrews Boys Hostel at Arakkonam.

The above institutions were facing severe problem of not having adequate electricity facility and were facing problems in handing children at dark hours. They approached Exnora International for any kind of remedy, and Exnora under Light A Home project agreed to initialize donating few lamps in the beginning and very soon eradicate the darkness in that place.

Mr. Eric and Purnima McCutcheon feels wonderful pleasure in lighting these children and the same feeling expressed by other donors too.
